Tamils Call on India
to Reject Defense Treaty With Sri Lanka [Bloomberg]

India should reject signing a defense accord with Sri Lanka
because the agreement may upset the cease- fire the Sri
Lankan government signed with Tamil rebels, the political party
of the rebel movement said.

``The effort to conclude a defense cooperation agreement with
India is seen by the Tamil people as a deliberate move by the
Sri Lankan state to strengthen itself militarily,'' the Tamil
National Alliance said.
The Mystery of the missing (Mano) Master

By D.B.S.JEYARAJ

The reported disappearance under mysterious circumstances
in Colombo of a senior anti - tiger Tamil politician has aroused
strong suspicion of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam being
involved in the act. Packianathan Rajaratnam alias Mano
Master went missing from his temporary residence in
Maligawatte since Nov 24th.. There is no conclusive evidence
of tiger involvement in the matter  at this juncture but the
information  available so far plus the track record of the tigers
in cases like these helps point the finger of suspicion in that
direction.

Rebel strike in Sri Lankan north [BBC News]

A strike called by the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka has shut down
at least two checkpoints on the main road to the north and
brought business to a halt.
The rebels say the shutdown was in protest at violence against
Tamils.

Defence ministry officials say that thousands of people have
been left stranded, and some need medical care.

On Wednesday, Sri Lanka's government rejected demands
from the Tigers unconditionally to resume peace talks or face
renewed military action.

From the Tamil Press [Sunday Observer]

All Tamil dailies on Tuesday led with stories connected to the
hartal in Trincomalee and the unrest there which ended with the
killing of one person.

The Thinakkural said that the President was in consultation with
her senior advisors on Prabhakaran's Heroes' day speech.
Elsewhere, the paper quoted JVP Minister K.D. Lalkantha and
said in the event of Ranil Wickremasinghe assuming the
country's Presidency, it would be equal to Prabhakaran
becoming the President.

Curfew was reimposed in the Trincomalee District from 4 p.m.
on Wednesday as a precautionary measure despite the
absence of any incidents, the Virakesari said on Wednesday.
However, it said there was tension in the district. In another
front page story, the paper said former UNP Parliamentarian
Tyronne Fernando would be sworn in as Governor for the North
East within the next few days.

The Sudaroli in its lead story said there was a coup by the
government, the UNP and JHU to make amendments to
Standing Orders and oust the TNA from Parliament. Norway's
special envoy Erik Solheim on Wednesday met with LTTE
theoretician Anton Balasingham at the latter's residence in
London.
Prabhakaran's speech : Mixed reactions [Sunday Observer]

Professor K. Sivathamby, Visiting Lecturer, Colombo University
said that the speech reflected the state of mind of the Tamil
people. He also said that much uncertainty prevailed in the
North and East. Nothing had been done to alleviate the present
situation either politically or economically.

Ketheesh Loganathan, Director, Centre for Policy Alternatives,
said that the tone of Prabhakaran's speech was subdued, but
the message was strong. On the positive side, he had indicated
that he was open to proposals and suggestions from the
government on the ISGA proposal. Although several LTTE
spokespersons mentioned about that, this was the first time
Prabhakaran himself stated this.
