Pongal Pandals and sweets for Sinhala travellers on
Pirapaharan's 50th birthday [Tamilnet]

Tamil people in the NorthEast and countries across the world
are celebrating the 50th birthday of the Leader of Liberation
Tigers, Velupillai Pirapaharan, Friday, 26 November. There
were special prayers in churches and temples. Pirapaharan
has led the Tamil struggle through three Eelam wars since he
founded Tamil New Tigers in 1972, at the age of 18, and later
renamed the organisation as Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE) in 1976.

The Sudaroli on Wednesday speculated that the three Tamil
and one Sinhala youth arrested with weapons on the road to
Parliament could be members of the Karuna faction. The
paper in another front page story said Sri Lanka Army would
soon take steps to officially discharge Army deserters.
Batticaloa Ampara LTTE military wing leader Colonel Bhanu
who was airlifted to Kilinnochchi on November 12, returned to
Batticaloa on Tuesday by road accompanied by SLMM
officials. He was not provided air travel to return due to bad
weather conditions. A Sahitya award winner and former MP U.
L. M. Haniffa known as Marudurkani for his excellence in
writing poems in Tamil, passed away on Tuesday. Sometime
ago the President conferred the title of Lankathilaka on him.

The Virakesari quoted the Attorney-General's Department and
said the Presidential order to make the death sentence
effective would include all those convicts who were sentenced
to death in the past, too. Several Tamil youth arrested on
Tuesday night in Colombo in a cordon and search operation
jointly conducted by the Police and Army, were later released.
LTTE has requested authorities to keep the Omanthai check
point on the A 9 highway open till midnight on LTTE's heroes'
day, November 27.
"Martyrs' Day is not a day of mourning... It is the day of
national resurgence. The day we seek our nation's

Neighbours in the small fishing village in Sri Lanka's far north
where he grew up baked a 50 kg cake to mark his birthday on
Friday, and hoisted the guerrillas' bright red flag emblazoned
with a golden tiger in his honour.  They fondly remember a
quiet, unassuming boy who liked reading comics.
Karuna wants India,
not Norway to mediate in Lanka [Hindustan Times]

Renegade LTTE commander Karuna has said that India and
not Norway should mediate to solve the Tamil problem in Sri
Lanka.

The message, sent to various media establishments in Sri
Lanka, said that India was more competent than Norway in this
matter, because both the Tamils and the Sinhalas considered
India a neighbour, which was familiar with the history of the
Tamils and Sinhalas. Karuna further said that India had, within it
own boundaries, Tamils in the state of Tamil Nadu, and was a
nation which upheld democracy and practised it. "India is,
therefore, the natural arbiter rather than a Scandinavian nation
of Europe," he said.

Karuna, who was special LTTE Commander for the Eastern
districts of Batticaloa and Amparai, rebelled against supremo
Prabhakran in March-April this year on the grounds that
Prabhakaran was discriminating against the Tamils of Eastern
Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan president meets with Iran Leader [Tehran Times]

The visiting Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga met
with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah
Seyyed Ali Khamenei here Wednesday.

During the meeting, the Supreme Leader referred to the two
countries’ good ties and stressed the need to expand
cooperation in various fields.

He described the situation of Muslims in Sri Lanka as
satisfactory and expressed hope that certain problems in that
country, including the issue of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam (LTTE), would be resolved. Ayatollah Khamenei pointed
to the two countries’ close views on various political and
international issues, especially the issues of Palestine and Iraq,
stressing “we are against the use of force in international
affairs and are seriously concerned about the unfortunate
situation of the people in Palestine and Iraq.”
'We hold similar views' - President Kumaratunga and

within the framework of the Non Aligned Movement.   Asked

Fight the fat [The Hindu]

Obesity as a concept has been in vogue for generations but
the damage it causes has only recently been documented.
Obesity can be classified into three categories: simple,
secondary and endocrine metabolic etiology. Each of these
brings in specific problems.
Kamal on an Express trail [The Hindu]

Conversing with Kamal Hassan is always a rewarding
experience, what with the interesting anecdotes that he
casually touches upon, the witty rebuttals and pertinent
observations of men and matters. Returning after a hectic day
of shoot, he snatches time to talk about his latest venture,
"Mumbai Express," a light-hearted bi-lingual (Hindi and Tamil).
His responses have you in splits most of the time, but you also
catch the point beneath the humour. Generally Kamal and
comedy prove a heady, paying combination. And the Titan is at
it again as always with gusto!
