| Toronto's foreign-language newspapers say they've become unexpected victims of the fallout from the sponsorship scandal [The Globe and Mail] Ethnic-press operators say anything but the status quo would be welcome. Even the relatively large publications are clamouring for help. The Sri Lanka Reporter boasts of its 100-page-a-month size and is chock full of ads selling trips back to the homeland, real-estate, automobiles and the services of immigration consultants. But Srimal (Chris) Abeyewardene, who puts out the paper with his wife and university-aged son, says he typically sells ads at very low rates -- meaning he needs Ottawa's help to get to the point of profitability. And that's why he put Mr. Martin on the hot seat in June, when the Prime Minister addressed the ethnic-press association in Toronto, before the election. |

| The Future of Tamil Nationalism [FrontLine] For an exclusive first-person assessment of what militancy has meant for the island's Tamils, the quest for a solution to the vital national issue and its social impact, V.S. Sambandan sought the views of leaders of parties that had given up armed struggle and joined parliamentary politics. All the leaders seemed to agree that the shift to parliamentary politics was influenced by two key events - the parties that made the transition to democratic politics were victims of internecine warfare and were buoyant with hopes about the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement. The ex-militants also share the apprehension over the Sri Lankan state's ability to address the core issues of Tamil nationalism. `Tamil nationalism is going nowhere': Dharmalingam Sithadthan, 56, (PLOTE) `Not on the right path': Douglas Devananda, 47 (EPDP) Of democracy and tolerance: Shankar Rajee, 55, (EROS) `We are on the correct path': Selvam Adaikkalanathan, 42, (TELO) `A spectre called Prabakaran': Thirunavukkarasu Sritharan, 46, (EPRLF - Varathar) `Keep the military alternative intact': Suresh Premachandran, 47, (EPRLF - Suresh) |
