" I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may
be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen,
and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal. "

India's stranglehold of Lanka's economy [The Sunday Leader]

Having destabilised Sri Lanka in the early 1980's using the Tamil ethnic issue and training
Tamil militants, India is now trying to systematically strangle Sri Lanka on an economic
level. In a stealthy, but focused plan the Indian government is steadily taking control of
Sri Lanka's oil and gas industry which will in the long term create turmoil and havoc for
the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and may even result in the closure of its
refinery.
From the Tamil Press: JVP goes East for awakening [Sunday Observer]

JVP's protest rallies in the East, Erik Solheim's meeting with Anton Balasingham in
London and finally the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission observing the
government's language policy in the breach were highlighted in the Tamil press from
Monday to Friday.

Posters have appeared in Ampara, Kalmunai and Samanthurai in the East opposing the
LTTE's ISGA proposals and an organisation calling itself "The Eastern Awakening" has
claimed responsibility, the Virakesari reported. The paper quoting TNA secretary general
R. Sampanthan said the party was expected to meet the new Indian High
Commissioner Nirupama Rao on their planned visit to meet Indian leaders in New Delhi
to brief them of the situation here.

Intense, yet detached [The Hindu]
Born Dutch Burgher, married to a Tamil, no wonder poet, novelist, playwright and
short story writer Jean Arasanayagam employs a double vision to make sense of her
existence in strife-riven Sri Lanka.

This ability to be both intense and distanced was evident when she read from her
work at the Association of Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies
Conference (Hyderabad, August '04).

When not attending conference talks, Arasanayagam held court in the foyer, listening
to young writers reading from their work. She could joke about her flight to India
watching cricket fans surreptitiously lacing coke with rum, or console a weeping
woman, "Have a good cry and get it out of your system".

Her empathy stands out when she writes of the muezzin and the Hindu tevarams
filling the city. "No contradiction, no argument between gods and prophets, only
reminders of man's sinfulness and his need for both hope and penance."

Munnabhai vs Vasoolraja [Sify News]

This isn’t the first comedy featuring the amazing Kamal Haasan, nor is it the blast.
Come to think of it, this isn’t even one of his funniest comedies. It could have been a
laugh riot, if only the director had stopped looking anxiously over his shoulder at the
original film.
Tamil Movie Review: "Madhura" [The Hindu]

MOVIE MAGIC'S "Madhura" that follows Vijay's roaring success, "Ghilli," is mostly action
for action sake. Racy no doubt but without reason. R. Madhesh dons too many
mantles this time — production, story, screenplay, dialogue and direction. Even when a
story lends itself to fast paced happenings, if the audience is made to feel that the film is
nearly over when there is still a solid half hour to go, the problem obviously lies in the
screenplay.
