Chinmaya Mission Sri Lanka National Youth Camp

Background

Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (CHYK) has conducted several camps and workshops around Sri Lanka. The National Youth Camp has almost become an annual event in the CHYK calendar. CHYK has conducted 5 such National Youth Camps in the past in the years 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 respectively. More than 2000 youth from all over Sri Lanka participated in and benefited from these camps. This year too CHYK plans to conduct the CHYK National Youth Camp in keeping with its vision.

Vision

As the nation building is the need of the hour, to enable and empower the youth with knowledge to transform their lives so that they can build a nation with harmony and peace in keeping with the motto of CHYK – “Harnessing Youth Potential through Dynamic Spirituality” and its vision of “To empower youth with the vision, values, and dynamism for success in all fields” is our vision for this camp.
Beneficiaries.

Approximately 150 youth in the age group 14 to 30 years from Colombo, Upcountry, Negombo, Trincomalee and Batticaloa will be the beneficiaries of this program.

Benefits

We want to enable and empower the youth transform their lives through character building.

Through this transformation they can build a nation of with peace and harmony. In order to achieve this we plan to provide knowledge and practical means of achieving the following through a series of lectures, workshops and games during this camp:

• Personality un-foldment, through enlightenment of the intellect and enrichment of character

• A systematic and deliberate preparation, to enable the youth to face the challenges and realities of life with a smile
• To cultivate qualities necessary to win the game of life such as:
• Clarity of vision
• Team spirit
• Capacity to rise above one’s weaknesses
• Equipoise and creativity
• To develop new habits, trends, goals and ways of living

The youth who took part in the camps earlier have been inspired from such programs and we believe that this camp too will enable the youth to transform their lives.

Venue & Time

It is intended to hold this camp at facility at the MAS Fabric Park at Warakapola, Sri Lanka – from 23rd to 27th of December 2009.

Let Us In-ICRC Tells Sri Lanka Government

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has appealed to the Sri Lankan government urging once again for full access to the internally displaced camps in the country’s north, according to a report in the Colombo newspaper The Sunday Leader, of Nov 8th, 2009:

The report as follows:

By Raisa Wickrematunge

ICRC Spokesperson Sarasi Wijeratne said the organisation has had no access to these IDP camps since July this year. “Discussions are however underway with government authorities to obtain access to these camps,” she said.

The ICRC on July 9 announced that it would “scale down” its operations, withdrawing expatriate staff, and shutting down operations in the Eastern Province. This was in response to a request from the government, following the victory over the LTTE.

In the same press release the ICRC stressed their willingness to “address the humanitarian needs,” of the IDPs, as well as newly resettled people.

“We are trying to ascertain the future role that the ICRC] will play in the country’s future activities,” Wijeratne said. [thesundayleader.lk]

Sri Lanka is torturing KP

“Army spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara says LTTE’s KP is NOT being tortured IN Panagoda. Now that denial makes me feel KP is BEING TORTURED THERE”, says Journalist D.B.S. Jeyaraj, on his twitter account.

Several independent reports recently alleged that Sri Lanka intelligence operatives are exerting excessive pressure on KP while interrogating him as he is refusing to speak and continuing to be uncooperative in providing information.

Selvarasah Pathmanathan alias “KP” a.k.a Kumaran Pathmanathan was seized in Malaysia on Wednesday August 5th and brought to Sri Lanka on Thursday August 6th.

Human Rights Watch recently said it has documented several cases in the country and detainees in Sri Lanka are “vulnerable to abuse.”

163,000 people in Sri Lanka camps under deteriorating conditions-UNHCR

“Following the recent returns, some 163,000 people still remain in the camps where conditions are deteriorating,” UNHCR said in a media communiqué issued on Nov 6th.

Other independent reports say that amid heavy rains and thunder storms many of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) held in Menik Farm camp are leaving from their shelters and seeking refuge in the public halls and school buildings located inside the camp.

UNHCR media brief notes that discussions with the Sri Lanka government regarding the situation in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu are ongoing, “to ensure that minimum return standards, such as completion of demining and access to services, are adhered to.”

According to government and independent civil society sources only a few people have settled in their own homes or allowed to stay with their relatives. Many of the IDPs brought to Jaffna peninsula Saturday Nov 7th have been lodged in militarized “interim camps.”

There are allegations that the Government of Sri Lanka is deliberately barring and delaying people returning to Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts and schemes to alter demographics are already being carried out in the districts.

In a query to Lt. Gen Sarath Fonseka – the much decorated “war hero” speculated to be Sri Lanka opposition common presidential candidate, Democratic People’s Front (DPF) led by Mano Ganesan has asked to reveal the stance of the “common candidate” on IDP re-settlement without changing Wanni demography, prior to extending the support of DPF.
