Weeping Into Water
Jean Bass
We'd been speaking
of man's inhumanity to man-
Rwanda,
the Sudan...
But Tsunami
was a word
many of us had never
spoken before.
And,who first uttered
'Mother Nature?'
Proclaiming the earth
as a powerful,nurturing
woman?
Now,nature's fury
is like the evil step-mother
in a Grimm's fairy tale.
But this is not
make believe.
Blink-
one moment here
one moment gone.
Cameras swept out of hands
before hands
could clasp in prayer.
Cries drowned by waves
before tears
could fall.
Rays of
an intoxicating sun
felt-
as heat became water,
as water became mud,
as mud became burial ground.
Oh,dear,Mother Nature
what of the lost mothers,
the orphaned children...
Are you weeping
into water now?
Back into the sea
that was lost?
