Balasingham denies discussing Jeyadevan with
the Brits

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

The Rajasingham Jeyadevan affair has predictably evoked much heat
amid the Tamil expatriate community particularly in Britain. This is
because Jeyadevn is  a well - known Tamil nationalist in London. The
methodology employed to coerce him into transferring control of a Hindu
temple has shocked most people. If this could happen to Jeyadevan it
could happen to us too is the dominant thought and speech in these
circles.
"As John Donne
said "ask not for
whom the bell tolls;
it tolls for you"
"At no stage has Jeyadevan's activities here or Sri Lanka or
anywhere been raised with me by British officials," Mr.
Balasingham said. [Tamilnet]
Tigers go to court over Eelappatheeswarar
Temple

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

The controversy surrounding the Alperton Eelappatheeswarar Hindu
temple has entered a new phase last week with activists of the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam organization in London going to courts over the
issue. In a striking example of dramatic irony the very same LTTE that
violated a number of legal norms in misappropriating the Sivan temple is
now trying to use the British judicial system to strengthen its hold over it.
Human Rights Protections Must Accompany
Peace Process - NPC [Tamilnet]

Fulltext of the Press Release by NPC follows:

"The serial killings mostly in the east have been among the most serious
of human rights violations taking place in the aftermath of the Ceasefire
Agreement signed between the government and LTTE in February 2002.
Some of the killings have taken place in the north and also in Colombo,
but most of them have been in the east of the country. These killings
have been targeted ones and have thus spread a climate of fear and
intimidation in the areas they are taking place. Most of the targeted
killings after the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement have been of those
identified to be working in opposition to the LTTE.

Promised Aid Slow to Reach Tsunami-Hit Areas [VOA News]

Three months after a killer tsunami brought death and destruction to 12
Indian Ocean countries, relief operations have been scaled down in the
worst-affected areas. But the difficult and costly reconstruction process for
millions of people has barely begun.
INGOs: Kalmunai - HelpAge International

Kalmunai is a beautiful fishing town in Ampara district, on the eastern
shores of Sri Lanka. In the town centre life goes on as usual, and the streets
are bustling with traffic and people.

But Kalmunai is one of the places worst hit by the tsunami. Less than a
kilometre from the centre there is almost total destruction. The wave
destroyed everything in its path for over 500 metres inland.
Caritas Reviews Sri Lanka Programmes - Three Months after
Tsunami [caritas.org]

Three months after the devastating Tsunami of 26 December 2004,
Caritas representatives met in Colombo to look at current emergency
assistance activities and to plan ongoing programmes responding to the
recovery and reconstruction needs of Tsunami-affected communities
along the coastal belt of Sri Lanka.

Caritas Sri Lanka is leading the Caritas programmes of assistance for
Tsunami-affected communities in the country with international
coordination provided by Secours Catholique-Caritas France.

As the daytime temperatures in Sri Lanka head higher in the months
leading to the traditional monsoon rains in June to July, Caritas shelter
programmes are working hard to provide temporary shelters, often utilising
traditional building materials of palm leaves and mud bricks, together with
latrines, drainage and access to drinking water for all Tsunami-affected
communities.

Tsunami relief effort brings foreign land home [Princeton-Packet]

Pri Alahendra, a first-grade teacher at Princeton Day School, says that for
her son, Sanjay, growing up in Central Jersey has always meant a certain
level of disconnect with his Sri Lankan roots.

But thanks to a school-wide tsunami relief initiative, spearheaded by Ms.
Alahendra herself, the PDS kindergarten student now has formed a strong
connection to his heritage.

Gemini Ganesan - Romance King of Tamil Films

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

Gemini Ganesan one time heart throb of Tamil cinema passed away
peacefully in his sleep at 1.30 am on March 22nd at his residence in
Nungambakkam, Chennai. In a career spanning five decades the
octogenarian made his mark in Tamil films as the romantic hero par
excellence and was known as "kaadhal Mannan" (King of Romance). His on
screen and off screen persona were intertwined and the evergreen Gemini
with four wives had several liaisons with attractive women. As Tamil Nadu
chief Minister Jayalalitha Jayaram remarked his death is truly "an end of an
era in Tamil cinema".

A chat with Jayakanthan:
"There will be many opinions about my stories. Not
everything is right nor everything is wrong."

"I was never attacked, and I never attacked
anyone. There was an opposition to Hindi
language those days. Tamils did fear about
this matter then. After the attempts to make feel
that opposition is unnecessary, that fear also
has diminished today and also opposition to
Hindi is not in those heightened levels today."

Hindu Business Interview:
Kalanithi Maran, Chairman & Managing Director of the Sun Network:

Response has been phenomenal. Now, we are thinking whether to do cable
also in the US. Even when I did it in Europe, it needed a lot of convincing.
There, it's not the Indian Tamils but Sri Lankan Tamils who are in greater
numbers. Even now I am not able to get into Canada. EchoStar has the
rights for North America, including Canada. They have not launched in
Canada.
I am saying they will get three times the base in Toronto
alone because of the number of Sri Lankans living there.
Murali stars in House for second time [Daily News]

The convivial mood that existed in Parliament on Tuesday when MPs across
the floor wished star off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan on the occasion of his
wedding to an Indian damsel turned into bitter acrimony yesterday when
arguments broke out on the status of individuals entitled to compliments of
the House on special occasions. It was Wimal Weerawansa who was first off
the block to congratulate Murali on Tuesday who this time raised a matter of
privilege complaining to the Chair over what he termed was a mischievous
twist given by Sirasa TV to the sentiments expressed by him in the House on
the occasion.
