Crowds block Sri Lanka army garrisons in
Chavakachcheri [TamilNet]

Crowds blocked Sri Lanka army (SLA) camps in
Chavakachcheri with burning tires and logs Saturday in protest
against the military for tear gassing and damaging property in
the northern peninsula’s second largest town. Protestors
stopped military traffic on the A9 highway through
Chavakachcheri. Some set fire to two military sentry points in
the town. Troubles erupted in this key town when a civilian was
hit and wounded by a speeding Sri Lanka army vehicle Friday
afternoon. SLA troops and Police tear gassed to disperse a
crowd that tried to set fire to the vehicle.

Tigers Exposed through
Rajasingham Jeyadevan Affair

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

T
he  arrest, detention, interrogation, duress, coercion, mental
torture and criminal misappropriation of property suffered by a
London based Sri Lankan Tamil Rajasingham Jeyadevan at the
hands of  the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has exposed several
fault lines of an organization claiming to fight for Tamil liberation.
The pain and agony undergone by this British resident in the Wanni
is all the more pathetic because Jeyadevan was a man who
supported the LTTE wholeheartedly in the past and was never found
wanting in espousing the Tamil cause.

Weekly Tamil Press Round-up

by S. Selvakumar

The Welikande shooting incident in which six people were killed was
the main story in all Tamil dailies on Monday. The Thinakaran in a
front page story said that moves were afoot to bring a no
confidence motion and oust the Administrative Director of the Sri
Lanka Islamic Centre at Maligawatte for baring a fraud, involving a
large sum of money donated by the Saudi Red Crescent for
tsunami relief work.

The Sudaroli quoted Jayantha Dhanapala and said he would
commence his campaign for the post of Secretary General of the
UN, only after the security council endorse his nomination.

The Virakesari said Thamilselvan has queried as to why such a hue
and cry should be made about the LTTE's Air Force when
everybody knew the Tigers had an Air Force and Navy. The
Thinakaran on Tuesday quoted Finance Minister Dr. Sarath
Amunugama and said the government was in receipt of the
proposals sent by the LTTE, to set up a joint mechanism to
rehabilitate the tsunami hit Northeast and added that the final
estimate on reconstruction work would be revealed on March 15.

The Virakesari quoted World Bank Resident Representative Peter
Harrold and said the bank would give US $ 75 million for the
reconstruction and rehabilitation of Northeast but this would be
disbursed through State agencies and would not be given direct to
the LTTE.

US Senator's office exposes
Lanka customs clearance fraud [Tamilnet]

An over-charge of nearly US$4000 on an NGO during clearance of
relief supplies was discovered due to the intervention of Maryland
Senator Paul Sarbanes office, sources said. The fraud was
discovered when officials of a Baltimor Church and Tamils
Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), approached the Congressman for
help to pressure Sri Lanka Government to waive the nearly $7000
US taxes it imposed on five water purifiers sent by the Baltimore
church to NorthEast victims of recent tsunami.
A customs Registered Agent, Mr Fayaz, who was helping the TRO to
clear five water purifiers has given forged documents to TRO officials
in Colombo indicating the taxes on the supplies to be Rs 620,219,
according to sources.

When the Senator's office contacted the Sri Lanka embassy in
Washington for details, the embassy forwarded tax documents which
showed the actual tax as Rs 227,694, sources said.

Healing touch;
a look at the emotional and psychological support provided
to those affected by the tsunami [The Hindu]

TWO months have passed since the tsunami struck our lives.
Faces of shock, horror and despair are still fresh on our minds. Not
a day has passed without some news about the tsunami and related
developments. As a mental health professional, I have been
accosted by several persons, including friends from the media, on
the increased importance given to mental health in this disaster.

Are we faced with more emotional and mental health problems than
before? Will the tsunami leave a permanent emotional and
psychological scar on the entire community? What are the
long-term implications on traumatised children?

Director Shnakar's dream project: "Anniyan" [The Hindu]

His oeuvre mixes powerful stories with messages, sugar-coated ... a
buffet for film buffs. Filmmaker Shankar assures SREEDHAR PILLAI
that "Anniyan," to be released soon, is a racy, fantasy thriller.

Summer holidays, the best season for releasing blockbusters, is fast
approaching and the Tamil film industry is looking forward to
"Anniyan." It is the most talked about big budget extravaganza
directed by Shankar.

"Mannin Mainthan" ... dialogue is its strength [The Hindu]

DO FILMS need messages or are they made only for entertainment?

M. Karunanidhi believes in the latter and has written the screenplay
and dialogue with much commitment, which shows. Action, comedy
family sentiment and much more go into this film of Azhagar Films
presented by Sree Thenandal Films.

Both Sathyaraj and Sibi have shown that they at home in both pathos
and action sequences. In character, they are poles apart.

You have comedy and also some good songs with a pleasing
photography. With all these ingredients to back up the message —
that one should not resort to violence under any circumstance — is
loud and clear with Rama. Narayanan deftly handling the subject. He
is also the producer.
