Intra Tiger Conflict Escalates in the East

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

T
he latest episode in the cycle of intra - tiger violence in the Eastern
province was the murderous assault on three woman tigers of the
political wing on Feb 28th at Thambiluvil. Though wounded critically
all three currently undergoing treatment in Colombo are now
pronounced out of danger.

The Karuna revolt last year depleted the Eastern mainstream tigers
of thousands of woman cadres including frontline leaders like
Nilavini, Premini, Lavanya, Theenthamil etc. Some of the middle -
level Pirapa loyalists went up the ladder as a result. The new
Batticaloa - Amparai Political wing Woman tiger leader is Kuveni.
She has participated in some political discussions and came out
publicly at Kausalyans funeral at Thandiyady where she made a
rousing address. Her deputy is Sasimathy.

From Tamil Press by S. Selvakumar

The Thinakaran on Monday quoted Government Peace Secretariat
and said final touches were being put to establish a joint mechanism
with the LTTE to distribute relief in the tsunami devastated areas in
the Northeast. At a provincial chief ministers conference it was
decided to fill all vacancies in the councils before the end of March.

Sri Lankan Government Imposes Duty
on Tsunami Donations [trousa.org]

As you may all know the Holy Redeemer Church of Baltimore kindly
sponsored 6 water purifiers to North-east of Sri Lanka, the most
affected part by tsunami in the island of Sri Lanka. The Church and
its volunteers raised the funds, purchased 6 water purifiers in South
Carolina and transported 5 of them to Sri Lanka with the help of
Fed Ex and Cathy Pacific and the purifiers arrived in Colombo on
Jan 27, 2005.

Government of Sri Lanka introduced taxes on all tsunami relief
goods to Sri Lanka except medicine and milk powder on Feb 1,
2005. The water purifiers were addressed to TRO-Colombo for
clearance purposes. The customs in Sri Lanka refused to release
the water purifiers in Sri Lanka and requested to pay taxes. Even
though the goods arrived well before the introduction of taxation on
tsunami goods. [

Prince on Sri Lanka tsunami tour [BBC]

During his visit he talked to volunteers from the Sri Lanka Red Cross
and to fishermen who showed him their broken boats.

"I feel awful. All I have done is interrupt their very hard work," the
prince said.

"You've got a lot more to do when I'm gone," he told the volunteers,
who are helping to clear debris from the area.

Assessing Needs Where There Are So Many: A Sri Lanka
Journal [One World]

We set up a scholarship program at D.S. Senanayake boys
college where there were 22 students who were affected by the
Tsunami. The scholarship will cover 4 months of boarding costs
and meals for students so they can stay on campus while
attending school. (The schooling is free.) These young people
saw their houses destroyed, lost some of their close family
members, and/or lack access in their small villages.

IOM: Tsunami Victims Vulnerable to Traffickers [VOA News]

The International Organization for Migration is mounting an
information campaign in camps housing tsunami victims in Sri
Lanka. The IOM is warning them to be wary of human traffickers,
who may take advantage of their desperate situation and make
false promises of a better life abroad.

The International Organization for Migration says Sri Lanka has
long been a so-called "source country" for women trafficked to
Lebanon and several Gulf States for forced labor and sexual
exploitation.

Canadian Tamils provide education support to Trinco
villages [Tamilnet]

Socio-Economic Development Organization of Trincomalee
(SEDOT) with financial help from Trincomalee Welfare Association
(TWA) in Canada has embarked on a scheme to assist students
and teachers in resettled Tamil villages of Thiriyai, Nochchikulam
and Adambodai in the Trincomalee district to uplift the standard of
education, civil sources in Trincomalee said. The scheme
supports salaries to additional volunteer and pre-school teachers
in the three villages.
Anandasangaree speaks to "The Hindu"

The veteran politician said that instead of putting up the needs of
the tsunami victims to the Government, the TNA MPs were only
interested in projecting the LTTE line that the aid must be handed
over to the LTTE.

"The Tamil people have already lost out in the process. In the
south and south-east, rebuilding has already begun. They are
building housing projects and hospitals. But there is no one to
even make a demand for a housing project or a hospital in the
North," Mr. Anandasangaree said.
A tsunami diary:

"Somewhere, in the long forgotten histories of the human race, we
know there have been previous tsunamis. Maybe, this was how
ancient civilisations suddenly vanished — on a similar, idyllic
Sunday morning. And yet, those of our early ancestors, who
survived that manifestation of the ocean's wrath, went on with
their lives

Tribute: The patriarch of Tamil [Frontline]

The need to hunt for the missing palm leaf manuscripts and bring to
light the hidden treasure of Tamil literature was felt. Foremost among
those who undertook this formidable task was Mahamahopadhyaya
Dakshinathya Kalanidhi Uthamadhanapuram Venkatasubbaiyer
Swaminatha Iyer (1855-1942), popularly known as "Tamizh thaththaa"
(the grand old man of Tamil). A Tamil professor and literary scholar,
Swaminatha Iyer's 150th birth anniversary was celebrated on
February 19.
