Will Joint Mechanism
be Chandrika's Swansong? [Tamiliana] By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

In the beginning it was the joint Mechanism. Next came the Post - Tsunami
Operational Management Structure. Now it is portrayed as the Tsunami
relief Board. The naming, name-calling and name - changing goes on
merrily even before the entity is to see the light of day. There is serious
doubt whether it will ever come to life since " saffron terror " threatens
protracted suicide and the big four of the tri - Nikayas are voicing protest.

P-Toms has Provisions to check Tiger Dominance

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

Some readers (Dayan Jayatilleke for one) at least may recall that this
column was one of the earliest to be critical of efforts to forge a joint
mechanism between the Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam to cater to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Tsunami
affected regions of the North - Eastern province. This column was
concerned about the powers to be given the LTTE through the proposed
joint mechanism. While not objecting to the principle of sharing power with
the LTTE in this respect this column objected to the tigers being given
authority in areas outside their sphere of control and wanted the LTTE to
be restricted only to their areas of control. It was also urged that the
international community remain firm this time and insist through Colombo
that the LTTE accept universal standards of human rights, pluralism and
democracy in their administrative sphere.

Sri Lanka split 'not a disaster' [BBC]

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga has played down the split in
her governing coalition after a main ally crossed over to the opposition.
The JVP withdrew from the government in protest at a proposed aid deal
with Tamil rebels.

It has left the president with a fragile minority government.

In a nationwide televised address, the president declared that the
proposed joint mechanism with the rebels was necessary for peace and
the economy.
Something is Rotten
in the State of Sri Lanka

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

[An Updated version of article that appeared earlier in
www.tamiliana.com]

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" was what the Bard from
Avon said  centuries ago about the land of "Hamlet" in his drama relating to
the vacillating prince of Denmark. Many of us in Sri Lanka or abroad have
known that something was rotting in the Island nation for many decades
since Independence from the British. Different people have had and will
continue to have different ideas about who was or is to blame. Many
interpretations have been given to the sequence of events troubling the
country in the past.

The Tamils and Sinhala Extremism

By Dr. Rajasingham Narendran

To stop being reasonable, accommodative, trusting and forgiving in
search of a peaceful and just solution within Sri Lanka and become once
again intransigent, unforgiving, vengeful, violent and ruthless in pursuit of
an independent Tamil Ealam is the only option that has been violently,
provocatively and very dramatically presented to the Tamils by some
extreme elements of the Sinhala polity over the past month.  Fading
memories of Buddharakita Thero and his cohorts, Wimala Wijewardene,
K.M.P and Kusuma Rajaratne, Prof. Jayasuriya, J.R. Jayawardene and his
Kandy march and the fate of the Bandaranaike-Chelvanayagam pact have
been rekindled in the Tamil mind and given rise to fresh doubts as to the
reliability of the Sinhala political establishment as a partner on the march
towards peace and justice.
The LTTE and Tamils of   Sri Lanka

By  Dr. S. Narapalasingam

Dr. Rajasingham Narendran elder brother of R. Jeyadevan, UK resident,
chartered accountant and the managing trustee of Eelap Patheeswarar
Sivan Temple located in Wembley, London has written some thoughtful
articles concerning the future of the Tamils. His concerns have come in the
wake of his brother’s ordeals in Vanni when he was held captive
incommunicado there by the Liberation Tamil Tigers for 62 days under
very trying conditions. He was released on 9 March 2005 after the
intervention of the UK authorities in London. Jeyadevan himself has written
in detail about his terrible experiences, both physical and mental, during
his incarceration.

"Lankans will benefit by Sethu project"

By PK.Balachandran

Most Sri Lankans, whether Sinhala or Tamil, flay India's plan to dig a
shipping canal through the Palk Strait. But some leading Tamil academics
support the project on the grounds that it will benefit Sri Lanka as well as
India.

They point out that the project will specially help the economic
development of the impoverished and war-devastated Sri Lankan North,
which is predominantly Tamil.

Remembering the Past

by K.S.Sivakumaran

Academics Gerard Robuchon, Asoka de Zoysa and Samantha de Alwis
and the director at the Alliance Francaise in Colombo gave us valuable
information and a video presentation on Jean Paul Sartre, the French
writer and philosopher last week. Although the number of people present
on the occasion was few, there was a stimulating discussion on Sartre and
related subjects prompted by earnest inquiries from the few present.
Laughing away the lull [Hindu]

It has always been a kind of hide and seek game with Prashanth. A formal
interview would invariably be followed by long spells of silence before you
spoke to him again.

The last time you had met him was when "Jai" was about to begin. Then
"Jai" happened and came a cropper and Prashanth seemed to have gone
into a cocoon. You didn't hear from the hero for a while — even after
"Shock" released and did quite well. So it was a surprise when he greeted
you with a hearty "Hi," recently. Sounding exuberant, friendly,
philosophical and mature all at once Prashanth was at his effusive best
that evening. Just a week ago he has begun shooting for his new film,
`Thagappan Sami,' with Namita and Sandhya as heroines.
`I have full faith in Shanker'

Director Shanker's "Anniyan" is much looked forward to. The fans of actor
Vikram can't wait for the release slated for June 17. The mega budget
venture has indeed raised the expectations of movie buffs on the whole.
Yet another star for whom "Anniyan" could be a landmark is Sada. If
"Jayam," her debut film in Telugu, was a runaway hit, the Tamil remake of
the same title was a great success too. Subsequently, she teamed up with
Madhavan and Srikanth and is all excited about Shanker's blockbuster.
Action laced with romance

Entering AVM studios is not a joy anymore for old timers. The vast
expanse, where many historic films have been shot, has been divided into
two parts. It is the famous Pillaiyar Koil section, swarming with people, that
draws one's attention.

Shooting is in progress and who is that wielding a mike giving directions to
cars and autos... Ravichandran, yesteryear hero. No, don't jump to
conclusions. He is not controlling traffic. He is directing ``Manthiran" which
has son Hamsavirdhan as hero. Art director Anand has done the set.
Still a dream girl, not a dream effort

Hema Malini is gorgeous but this coffee table book on her is certainly not
so, though it has a lot of facts on the dream girl and some rare pictures
too.

Shri Aurobindo, Mother Mira and the Auroville

BY Thilaka Vivekanandhan Wijeyaratnam

The Globe - the hall of meditation

WHAT brought Aurobindo of the Orient and Mira of the Occident
together? Was it a twist of fate or spiritual gravitation or the need of the
people for spiritual guidance? It may be one or all three.

Sri Aurobindo was born in Calculta in the year 1872 on the 15th of August.
His father Krishnathan Gosh was an Anglophile. So much so that when
Aurobindo was 7 years, he sent him to UK with his elder brothers. He
wanted to make him a Brown Sahib perhaps
Success on both fronts

The other day you happened to listen to A.R.
Srinivasan (ARS) on FM.

Nataka Academy, Chennai, had conferred the title, Nataka Ratna, on
him just the previous evening and the seasoned actor of theatre, film
and television was on a joyous nostalgic sojourn.

During the course of the radio interview what struck you was the
sexagenarian's veneration for his late parents. He starts off on a
similar note when you settle down for a face to face with him at his
residence one morning.
Journey into the world of snakes

Biophiles are those who love nature and are always ready to support
the cause of conservation. The distinguished Harvard biologist Edward
O. Wilson called this state of mind biophilia, and in it he saw new hope
for the long-term survival of humanity.

All biophiles naturally find a film by Romulus Whitaker a powerful
magnet.

we were grandfathers!
