Tamil Fratricide Continues in Eastern border region

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

The tragic phenomenon of Tamil fratricide continues in the Eastern Province
and its border regions. The latest incident in this seemingly endless saga
was the killing of at least nine persons at  a clandestine jungle camp in the
Polonnoruwa district bordering that of Batticaloa. In a bizarre development
four of  the nine corpses presumed dead have now gone missing. In a
further ironic twist  the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam  disclaim
responsibility for the deaths and allege that it was a result of internal strife
within the Karuna faction while the  Tamil Eelam United Liberation Front
denies it totally and accuses in turn the LTTE of having launched the attack.
Complicating matters more are charges of complicity by the Sri Lankan
armed forces.

Sanskritization of Shri Lanka
Letter to Prof Ratnajeevan H. Hoole and Response

I refer to the article titled Sanskritization of Shri Lanka by Prof. S.
Ratnajeevan H. Hoole.

Prof. Hoole has displayed a deep sense of prejudice and ignorance against
Sanskrit. He fails to realize that both Tamil and Sinhala have long been
Sanskritized languages.

Whither Tamils

By: Dr. Rajasingham Narendran

In recent articles,  I tried
to portray the  continuing  suffering of the Tamils
and their sad plight viz-a-viz the Sri Lankan
governments and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam
(LTTE).  In view of the  intentions of the
President to  introduce  a federal system of
governance  to Sri Lanka and the efforts of  Norway to
establish a coordinating body representing both the
government and the LTTE to handle post-tsunami
reconstruction in the north  and east, it is
imperative that the political future of the Tamils in
Sri Lanka is examined with a long term perspective.
For all intents and purposes it has to be assumed that
the proposed joint post-tsunami reconstruction
mechanism may be  a prelude to the LTTE  being
conferred a dejure status, at least in the areas under
their control.
Politically motivated focus on child soldiers said
detrimental to peace [TamilNet]

Addressing the 61st Session of UN Commission on Human Rights (CHR 61),
Ms. Karen Parker, J.D., a human rights lawyer and chief delegate for
International Educational Development - Humanitarian Law Project, an NGO
accredited by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, warned
Monday that politically motivated focus on child soldiers without genuine
consideration for the children themselves is detrimental to peace. Ms. Parker
urged the UN Commission to give full support to Sri Lankan peace process
facilitated by the Norwegian Government.

Ms. Parker, a San Francisco based attorney, testifies regularly at the U.N.
Commission on Human Rights in Geneva and serves as an expert witness in
legal disputes involving the application of armed conflict law.

An outsider in Batticaloa would get the impression that the JVP is the only
organisation to build temporary houses for the people of this district who
lost their homes in the tsunami. Eye-catching JVP posters announcing the
public meeting to handover the houses to tsunami victims in Palamunai, a
not-so-wealthy Muslim hamlet near Kattankudy, can still be seen in all the
main towns and villages of Batticaloa. One often finds a crowd at the JVP
office in Kattankudy. It is not uncommon these days for one to come across
educated young men in the main Muslim towns of the Amparai district who
seem quite impressed by the JVP's alacrity in helping people hit by the
tsunami. Some of them are not just impressed but are beginning to learn
the JVP's political philosophy.

Musical heritage [The hindu]

The first thing that strikes you when you meet her is the frail frame and the
affability. T. Mukta, granddaughter of the redoubtable Vina Dhanammal
and part of the famous yesteryear duo Brinda-Mukta, carries her musical
heritage easily. Today, she is the last surviving representative of her
generation of the Dhanammal family, which includes luminaries like her late
sister T. Brinda, and cousins T. Balasaraswati and T. Viswanathan.
Abode of the vulture [The Hindu]

It was a clear and pleasant October evening. The forest was silent except
for occasional birdcalls. A Giant Malabar Squirrel scampered along a low
branch. The deciduous forest patch was at its best after the monsoon
showers, the grass a verdant green. We were in the middle of a small
valley, the five of us, anxiously scanning the tall trees around for signs of
activity.
Marathon march [The Hindu]

Seventy Five years ago in Tamil Nadu, C. Rajagopalachariar (Rajaji) led 100
chosen Congress volunteers to walk 150 miles in 15 days from Tiruchirapalli
to Vedaranyam, then in Thanjavur District, to make salt at the seashore and
defy British Government's prohibition of its manufacture without licence.

Known as the Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha, it was a landmark event in the
annals of freedom movement in South India. The peace brigade braved all
the hazards of Government's repressive measures — lathi blows, prohibitory
orders, arrests and imprisonment.
Newly-discovered Mamallapuram temple
fascinates archaeologists [The Hindu]

The temple discovered by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a few
hundred metres to the south of the Shore Temple at Mamallapuram, near
Chennai, must have been as big or even bigger than the Shore Temple,
said archaeologists conducting the excavation there. The ASI had
discovered massive remains of a temple on the shore, close to the Shore
Temple during the excavations it had conducted in February and March.
Bipasha looks like an aunt! [Rediff]

If you want to know what Sachein (yes, the numerologist seems to have
been at work) is all about, here goes: College boy meets college girl, falls in
love, and declares his love.

The girl does not believe in infatuation and vociferously spurns the boy's
love. But finally, the girl falls in love with the boy but does not divulge it to
him -- it would hurt her ego to do so.
Mumbai Xpress in Tamil rocks! [Rediff]

I walked into a theatre screening the Tamil version of Mumbai Xpress after a
three-hour encounter with the superstar, Rajnikanth. After having watched
how a faithful, frame-by-frame reconstruction of a classic Malayalam movie
can still turn out to be terrible, I was hoping for a movie that would be a cut
above Chandramukhi.

And glory be, Mumbai Xpress put on display Kamal Haasan at his very best
-- and better still, it was an original story! Mumbai Xpress is not just a cut,
but a whole ladder above the rest!
Chandramukhi is a certain hit! [Rediff]

Chandramukhi starts unusually, with Tata Indicom welcoming viewers to see
this Rajnikanth starrer. Then, Sivaji Ganesan is shown praying with his
mother for his production company, the same way Prithviraj Kapoor is shown
in an RK banner movie.

The story starts with a haunted palace and a 150-year-old legend. A cruel
king lusts for a beautiful dancer, Chandramukhi, and forces her to be his
mistress. But she continues her relationship with her true love. When the
king finds out, he beheads the lover and burns her alive. But her soul lives
on for revenge. A king-size snake, life-size portraits, jewels and costumes
keep the legend alive.
